Beck's Cars Cake

This was the cake I made for my cousin Christy's son Beck. It was his second birthday this August and he is OBSESSED with the Disney movie Cars. This was the first cake that I made the icing from scratch, as well as using both buttercream icing and fondant. My brother came up with the sign saying 'Beck's 2nd Birthday Next Exit' which was a pretty sweet touch. There was also a sign giving the distances from Westlock to Edmonton, Calgary and Vernon. some road signs included on the cake were a rocks falling sign, traffic light sign, and the bumpy road sign. The biggest hit of the cake was the car on top, that's for sure, and I'll admit it was pretty sweet, doing flips and what not. I felt so awful though because the birthday boy had some sort of allergic reaction and started freaking out, rubbing his head and screaming and crying. It was pretty scary. But I think Beck was pretty happy with the cake, and that's the most important thing.

Belly Cake

When I found out my cousin was pregnant on Monday, I immediately started planning out a cake. I ended up going to the store 3 times and staying up until 4:00 in the morning (working after only 4 hours of sleep is not fun!) but it was well worth it. Her reaction/expression was definitely one of the best I've had yet! The Mommy-to-Be's favorite color is green and I was a huge fan of the color scheme used on a previous cake of mine, so I used that for inspiration. I can't take credit for the idea of the cake itself though, there are thousands of these cakes online... don't search for them though because then you'll think mine sucks, haha. I planned on it to look like a dress with straps too, but when you don't start a cake until 10:00, you change your plans to something much more simple and less time consuming! I had so much fun making this cake, and I am so excited for my cousin and her husband. They're the type of couple you just KNOW will be amazing parents; not to mention her parents (I'm sure his parents too... I just don't really know them) will be amazing grandparents too. They spoil me like crazy and I'm only their neice! Thanks for looking

Army Tank Cake

This cake was made for a friend's brother's 10th birthday party. The client was pretty specific about the theme, which actually made my job a lot easier! I don't know what the deal with all the corn starch is but other than that I am really pleased with the results of this cake. It was pretty fun to make, mainly because I knew exactly what I was going to do. The little person was a last minute touch because it just seemed to be missing something. Covering squares/rectangles is so easy, I love it!

Farm & Oil Rig Cakes

I made this cake for my Aunt Valerie's friend, Ingrid.
The cake was for her husband, Jim, for Father's Day as well as his birthday. She asked for something farm related as well as something related to an oil rig. I personally didn't think the two belonged on the same cake, so I decided to make the farm scene as one cake and the oil rig themed cake seperate. These are all my fondant farm animals. The sheep is definitely my favorite! I spent so much time on this cake, and these guys were definitely my favorite part of the cake.

Here's a top view of the finished product. It wasn't flawless, of course, but I think it turned out okay. I decided not to cover the cake itself in fondant as I was under the impression the customer didn't really want a lot of fondant. I think that may have been a bad idea though, as the fondant figurines were a little too heavy so when I put them on the cake, they started to sink! But now I know for next time. The barn and silo are made of rice krispie treats and then covered in fondant. I hope she was happy with it and that the birthday boy likes it! I don't have any pictures of the completed cake that aren't top views because I put the cake in this crate thing before I took pictures and it was too much effort to take it out.

And this is the oil rig themed cake. I had a 3-D oil derrick but at 10:00 when I went to check to see if it had finished setting, I realized my dad ruined it! Boy was I upset, so I quickly made this cut out and called it a night! After over 16 hours, I was finally finished and I couldn't have been more happy to be done! I had a lot of fun making the farm creatures and I discovered how much easier it is to cover a square in fondant versus a round cake! Thanks for looking. Oh, and please don't be like my dad and point out all the flaws. I know the cake wasn't perfect, I'm still learning!!

Father's Day

I saw this cake on the Wilton website and I absolutely loved it! I have a cake due this weekend that was originally going to be a square cake covered in fondant but then I chickened out and changed the design. So when I saw this cake online, I decided that this would be a great way for me to practice covering a square/rectangle cake! I think it turned out pretty well! It's really tiny though, but that's okay.

He was so excited when I showed it to him; I loved the expression on his face! It really is such an awesome feeling when you give someone a cake that they love! He's bringing it to work tomorrow to show some people, so hopefully that will lead to some more business!!

My First Paid Job!

I made this cake for my neighbour's son's 8th birthday. This wasn't the original plan but due to lack of energy, I had to make some changes. She asked for something simple as it was just for the family. That actually worked out pretty well for me since I'm still learning.

Overall, I feel bad for charging her for this cake. The bow looks absolutely awful and the helmet is hardly even distinguishable. But she was really pleased with it and when I started to point out the mistakes (I don't know why I do this!) she responded with "don't even point them out because it looks flawless to me". I can't believe she gave me forty bucks though!

My favorite part is the little footballs which my mom and Justine made. And the actual covering of the cake was definitely the best I've done! I really need to learn how to cover square cakes though, round ones are getting boring.

Happy Mother's Day Grandma!

This was the cake I (with the help of my friend Justine) made for my Grandma for Mother's Day. The flower pot is a cupcake covered in fondant and the "soil" is actually left over cake crumbs!
We worked on this cake for so long, I can't even believe it. It was a lot of fun (until the last hour or so!) and I'm definitely going to get Justine to help me out with my next cake! She had so many good ideas and was really easy to work with. This works out great too because now my boyfriend doesn't have to be forced into helping me out, and it gives Justine and I something to do!
My favorite part of this cake is definitely the flower pot. My Grandma even saved it!The lady bug is pretty cute too! The fence was supposed to have two posts in the middle, but at 11:00 we decided one was enough!

Good Luck Janine!

So, I recently found out that my hair dresser, Janine, is moving!! I called her today to see if she could fit me in for a bang trim some time this week, and I was informed that her last day is Friday! How terrible is that! She is by far the world's greatest hair dresser and the sweetest person you'll ever meet. Luckily she's only moving less than an hour away, so I'll still be able to get my hair done by her. Yay!

I decided to make her a cake for tomorrow, as she managed to fit me in for my trim and I figured she'll probably have a bunch of desserts and what not on Friday. The cake is fudge marble with chocolate icing covered in white fondant. Everything is edible. The straightener is entirely made of fondant, as well as the round brush. The bristles in the round brush are tiny pieces of dry spaghetti though. I was going to also include a pair of scissors and a comb, but I quickly ran out of space!

Here's a side view of the cake. The border and the message are also fondant. The message reads "GOOD LUCK JANINE!" I'm so excited to give this cake to her tomorrow! I hope she likes it. I absolutely LOVE my Chi straightener! I think it's super cute and probably my favorite fondant creation. Thanks for looking!

Gift Box Cake

This is the fourth fondant cake I have made. It was a treat to myself for studying so hard for my psych final and stressing out over my sociology final assignment.

Ryan chose the colors, since they're my favorite, and I think they look great together. The bow's loops deflated quite a bit and I probably could have added more, but I decided that I was pretty tired and was happy enough with it to just leave it how it was. I also probably could have used gumpaste instead of fondant to ensure the loops would keep their shape but I mainly just wanted to use up the left over fondant that I had and to relieve any left over stress.

Over all, I am pretty happy with this cake's outcome. I think the colors go great together and it was a fairly simple cake to make and I had a lot of fun making it.

Audi Rings Cake

My boyfriend is a huge fan of his 2002 Audi A4 so for my third cake, I decided to do something related to that. I was too nervous to attempt a car at this stage so I figured the logo would be sufficient enough, and Ryan was more than happy when I told him my idea!

This is what the cake looked before we covered it in fondant. The original plan was to cut the middle of each cake out, but luckily I forgot to do that when I started icing the first cake. There are four flavours: (from right to left) french vanilla covered in chocolate icing, white with vanilla icing (Ryan's favorite!), chocolate fudge with chocolate icing and rainbow bit with vanilla icing.

Okay, you caught me! I didn't make those cakes from scratch, or any cake for that matter. I enjoy the decorating part a lot more than baking the cakes and I like the convenience, reliabilty and consistent results of cake mixes.

This is the final outcome of the cake and I think it turned out great! He posted it on an Audi forum and many people commented on how cool his girlfriend was. It was quite a hit with his family members as well.

The rings were made from gray fondant and then to make it silver, I mixed the silver lustre powder with some water (we don't have vodka, lemon juice, or clear vanilla extract in our house) and painted it on wish some paint brushes.

So far this is my favorite cake that I've made and definitely the one that we put the most effort into!

Bee Hive Cake

The Bee Hive cake was my second fondant cake. I absolutely love the little fondant bees! They are super easy and fun to make and not to mention incredibly adorable!

I wish I would have made more tiers that were not as thick and a pan that had a more cone-shaped or round top to make it have more of a bee hive look.

Overall, I was not too satisfied with this cake. I had quite a bit of trouble covering the cake with the fondant (I'm not at the stage where I can do it alone and Ryan was at work!) I ended up creating a fairly large hole near the bottom, and in attempts to hide it, I decided to make an entry for the bees. Unfortunately, the hole was quite large so the doorway turned out to look really unproportional. Plus the cake was pretty lop-sided! But that's okay, I'm still learning, right? The next one will be much better!

I sure did get a lot of compliments on these guys though! The black fondant was a little bit dry so the stripes were starting to crack, but I think they turned out very well regardless!

First Fondant Cake

I have always enjoyed baking and decorating cookies, cupcakes and of course cakes but have never tried decorating with fondant.. until now!
Being a huge fan of Ace of Cakes and The Food Network: Challenge, I was curious to see what one of my cakes would look like if I were to use fondant.
I found a recipe online for marshmallow fondant and it wasn't too hard to make so we decided to try making it from scratch rather than buy it.
I decided to start with an extremely easy design so I wouldn't get discouraged. It's not flawless, obviously, but I was really happy with how it turned out!
