This is what the cake looked before we covered it in fondant. The original plan was to cut the middle of each cake out, but luckily I forgot to do that when I started icing the first cake. There are four flavours: (from right to left) french vanilla covered in chocolate icing, white with vanilla icing (Ryan's favorite!), chocolate fudge with chocolate icing and rainbow bit with vanilla icing.
Okay, you caught me! I didn't make those cakes from scratch, or any cake for that matter. I enjoy the decorating part a lot more than baking the cakes and I like the convenience, reliabilty and consistent results of cake mixes.
This is the final outcome of the cake and I think it turned out great! He posted it on an Audi forum and many people commented on how cool his girlfriend was. It was quite a hit with his family members as well.
The rings were made from gray fondant and then to make it silver, I mixed the silver lustre powder with some water (we don't have vodka, lemon juice, or clear vanilla extract in our house) and painted it on wish some paint brushes.
So far this is my favorite cake that I've made and definitely the one that we put the most effort into!
This is fantastic!! I'm trying to figure out how to do one for my husband too. Where did you get the cakes if you didn't make them yourself?
